Photography snuck up on Philip. How else to explain how a young man with a degree in political science from Princeton ended up as a fine-art photographer. Living in New York after college, he began collecting prints and photography books, including a first edition of Robert Frank's The Americans. He visited galleries; he took classes; he taught himself to see. He followed Ansel Adams' dictum, "A good photograph is knowing where to stand."
